- the name derives from the era of Napoleon III, 1852 - 1870, an era of opulence in French buildings and fashion
- this style may be found in huge brick mansions and wood, single family dwellings
- the style always uses a mansard rood in the design
- windows and doors have wide, lavishly detailed surrounds
- window panes are full or single verticals, there may be dormers and one story bay windows
- a tower may be included
- repeated columns or pilasters are found at a extending portico

Marine City only has a couple of homes left in this style. Unfortunately, one has been extensively reworked over the years and is barely recognizable as Second Empire. The other is in disrepair. St. Clair, Michigan, eight miles north of Marine City, has a good example of the style on M29 on the north side of town .
