ITALIANATE  c. 1860 - 1900

ITALIANATE c. 1860 - 1900
  • elements of Renaissance style are found in these houses
  • expect a two story structure with box-like proportions
  • a square cupola and/or a Widow's Walk adorns the roof line
  • the roof line is low pitched with a wide overhang supported by many decorative brackets
  • windows often have a decorated lintel cut in a shallow arch
  • corners may be decorated with quoining, i.e. rusticated masonry or wood made to look like stone
  • at times a tower with arched openings is included

The Lester House was built in c. 1865.  The two storey porch was added in 1884 and is High Victorian Italianate style.  Greek decorative motifs embellish the capitals which are a free interpretation of classic styles.  The low arch shape of the windows and front door are typical Italianate features.
