Craftsman Style Architecture

CRAFTSMAN  c. 1905 - 1930
A drawing of a Craftsman Style house.
Craftsman Style
  • expect a low pitched, gabled roof
  • could be one or one and a half and two stories
  • unenclosed, wide, overhanging eaves with brackets and beam ends exposed visually stress a wood craftsman's skills
  • a substantial porch runs partial or perhaps full width of the house
  • gabled dormers are prominent
  • porch columns are sturdy, square or angled masses combining wood and stone, especially cobble stone
  • the wide popularity of this style, started in California by Charles and Henri Greene, was due in part to extensive media attention in magazines
  • this style is quite influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement
  • expect large, multi-paned windows, perhaps with a bit of stained glass

This Craftsman house is not located in Marine City.  The owners of the Marine City example we selected request that we wait till restoration is complete before including it in this survey.
